Madonna and Justin rehearsing at Roseland

madonnalicious reader DJ Danny Echi is also the proud owner of the wristband for tonights show and is now #30 in line to get into the venue later - below is his picture of the Roseland marquee.

Madonna, Justin Timberlake and the band are currently rehearsing at Roseland.

Remember fans in the US can watch the show live on MSN at www.music.msn.com/madonna from 10:00pm EDT, and Vodafone customers in several European countries will also be able to catch the show live online.

Madonna on track for #1 US debut

Madonna will leave Warner Bros., the only label she’s ever known, with a bang.

Her final studio album for the Bunny, Hard Candy, is on track to sell between 275-300k, which will handily end Mariah Carey’s two-week reign with E=MC2, according to one-day sale reports from those retailers still standing around this great country of ours.

The Material Gal has one more album, a greatest hits collection, to go before splitting for a long-term deal with concert promoter Live Nation. The album’s her first since 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor, which sold more than 8 million worldwide. In the U.S., it debuted at #1, selling 351k copies in its first week, taking the top spot from Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts. In its second week, Confessions on a Dance Floor sold 210k copies and slipped to #4 with a 39% sales decrease. To date, the album has sold over 1.7 million copies in the U.S.

Wristbands issued and a wave for fans

Lucky fans who queued outside Roseland last night and early this morning were awarded with their wristbands for tonights show and a wave from Madonna!

madonnalicious reader Fernando sent in this report fresh from getting his wristband (of which only 750 were being issued):

Just got our wristband for Roseland tonight....this wristband will then be switched out for the actual wristband that will be used to enter the venue.

Madonna drove by Roseland in her SUV at around 11:15pm, rolled down her window and waved at all fans standing outside waiting to get their free wristband. It was amazing! She was smiling and looked great! Can't wait till tonight!

Sweet reviews for Madonna's Hard Candy

As parting gifts go, Madonna's 11th studio album - and her last before she exits long-term record label Warner Bros. - is unusually generous, if early reviews are to be believed.

Released internationally this week, and hitting U.S. stores on Tuesday, 'Hard Candy' scored solidly among rock critics, although much of the credit, or blame, they said, should go to the established hit-makers with whom she collaborated.

The dance sounds, with hip-hop influence, see Madonna return to her roots and shed the weighty issues for which she regularly campaigns. And by working with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams, she puts safety first.

'It's surprising that her 11th studio album....is an act of submission,' wrote Caryn Ganz of the Rolling Stone music magazine, giving 'Hard Candy' four stars out of a possible five. 'For 'Hard Candy,' Madonna's midlife meditation on her own relevance, she lets top-shelf producers make her their plaything.'

The Independent newspaper's Andy Gill, in a three-star review, argues that Madonna, who turns 50 this year, aims to satisfy 'the sweet tooth of functional dance-pop.'

'Why else would she turn to off-the-peg hit-machines The Neptunes, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, after such success with more adventurous producers like Mirwais, William Orbit and Stuart Price?'

Alexis Petridis, in a three-star rating for the Guardian, calls Timberlake's involvement in 'Hard Candy' a 'mixed blessing,' with the familiar sounds from his last album 'FutureSex/LoveSounds' 'less startling (the) second time around.'

He also slammed Madonna's lyrics, including a line from 'Dance 2night': 'You don't have to be rich and famous to be good.'

But Petridis argued that production duo The Neptunes, including Williams, 'ride to 'Hard Candy's' rescue,' highlighting songs such as 'Incredible,' 'Give It 2 Me' and 'She's Not Me.'

Jon Pareles of the New York Times believed Warner, with which Madonna has worked for 25 years, would be more than happy with the record.

'It doesn't burn bridges with her major label - just the opposite,' he wrote. 'It's the kind of album a record company longs for in the current embattled market: a set of catchy, easily digestible, mass-appeal songs by a star who's not taking chances.'

Madonna, one of the world's biggest-selling artists, ditched Warner Bros. last year and signed a 10-year deal, including a three-album commitment, with concert touring company Live Nation believed to be worth $120 million.

The agreement was an example of the so-called '360-degree deal' that has become increasingly popular in a music business struggling to make money just from selling records.

The '360-degree' deals typically involve publishing, touring, merchandising and digital rights, as well as recording.

The first single from Madonna's album, '4 Minutes' (featuring Justin Timberlake), went to No. 1 in the British singles charts and peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 listing.

Kim Wilde Both "Blames" & Admires Madonna

80s popstar Kim Wilde "blames" Madonna for the demise of her once flourishing music career. Wilde, who had hits with Kids In America and You Keep Me Hanging On, said: “I hit the top of the charts two years before Madonna came on the scene and stole my thunder. I remember seeing her and thinking, ‘Here’s trouble!’ I’d be lying if I said it didn’t get to me, but I never disliked her.”

Kim, 47, says she now takes inspiration from the Material Girl singer. “I look at her now and think she’s amazing,” said Wilde. “When I started hearing about her yoga, I was inspired to look after my body. Now I love going for long walks, eating healthily and working out with a trainer. All that exercise pays off for her – so why not for the rest of us?”

The Meaning of "Hard Candy"

Here’s something articles might have not mentioned about Madonna's album title. The term “hard candy” is Internet slang for an under-aged girl. Given Madonna’s long history of cheeky sexual innuendo, I’m pretty sure she was aware of this particular connotation.

Madonna Live On MSN - April 30 at 10 p.m. EDT (in the U.S.)

April 29, 2008 — Madonna’s exclusive performance at New York City’s famed Roseland Ballroom will be available live to millions of fans via an online broadcast at http://music.msn.com/madonna, it was confirmed today by MSN and Control Room, which announced that the show will stream live Wednesday evening, April 30, at 10 p.m. EDT in the United States and will be available on demand to international audiences on May 15. Along with some past hits, Madonna will be debuting several new songs including her 37th No. 1 smash single “Four Minutes” from her CD Hard Candy. The Control Room-produced show will also include never-before-seen rehearsal footage, a pre-recorded interview with Madonna and her full performance, giving fans around the globe unprecedented access to one of the biggest music events of 2008 by simply logging on to MSN Music In Concert.
“Madonna is a legendary performer, and we’re thrilled to be bringing this live online broadcast to her fans on the heels of her Hall of Fame induction, her record-breaking 37th top-10 single ‘4 Minutes,’ and in conjunction with the launch of this hotly anticipated new album,” said Aaron Grosky, Control Room president. “As experts in bringing live music performances to the Web, Control Room will deliver Madonna fans an online experience that captures the excitement and authenticity of this exclusive show.”

4 Minutes added to 27 weeks spent at chart summit

Half of Madonna’s 12 previous number one singles spent a single week at number one but 4 Minutes has no intention of surrendering its title yet, and on its second week at the chart summit it moves further ahead of the chasing pack, securing sales of 49,771 copies following its release on CD.

Madonna’s one week wonders: True Blue, Who’s That Girl, Frozen, American Pie, Music and Sorry. Those that stuck around longer: Into The Groove, Papa Don’t Preach, La Isla Bonita, Like A Prayer, Vogue and Hung Up. All told, Madonna has spent 27 weeks at number one, the same as Take That. The only acts with more weeks at number one are Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Cliff Richard, Frankie Laine and Abba.

Open Letter To The Readers of Madonnathon

Dear Readers,

I understand that sometimes my views on certain issues regarding Madonna or her actions or her beliefs might not seem very idolizing to you. This is because I am exposed to a lot, much more than what you see in this blog. While I continue to admire many things Madonna is and does, this past six months, running this blog on a day to day basis, has changed my attitude towards many things and opened my eyes on certain issues. I have grown from having a simple love relationship with this woman into having a love/hate relationship with her. I do not consider this a bad thing, I do not need to agree with her on every issue to continue being a fan and running this blog. I can agree to disagree with her. It is also not my intention of hurting anyone's beliefs or feelings when I sometimes express my views - sometimes with a laugh, sometimes with a more angrier tone, depending on the topic and the situation. I encourage you to speak your mind whenever you wish to do so. However, due to past experiences, I will not allow directly insulting comments - and now I don't mean insulting comments directed at me only, that would be hypocritical - I mean overall. We can all have our opinions and beliefs and express them in a civil manner as nothing good ever comes from shouting each other f**k you's.

What really made me write this open letter is the issue of Kabbalah. As you most likely already know, I don't believe in Kabbalah. To me it's like believing in a fake story. It is not a religion, it is based on a belief system created by only few people and only less than ten years ago (referring to Kabbalah Center which Madonna is part of). Kabbalah is a mystical interpretation of the Old Testament - to me it does not represent faith. What makes me dislike it further is how big of a role money plays in this organization and does so in more ways than one. Money and material gain has no place in true faith, it is the furthest thing from God and what He represents.

When I say that I don't believe in Kabbalah, that it's not a religion and that it is a man-made belief system, I am not in any way saying that all religions aren't man-made - simply because they are all man-made. Religion is not the same as believing in God, the two have a very distinctive difference. Religion is something man has made from the so-called original Word, taken parts out, putting things in, interpreting them in a way that suits their own needs and goals - and all religions have done this. All religions have also done unfortunate things while claiming to be "sacred" and declaring their "one true word". But Kabbalah is not even a religion, it is simply a mystical belief system.

I am not against Madonna (nor anyone else) for being into this belief system - it is her (their) soul, not mine, so she (they) can do whatever with it. What I've come across while reading about Kabbalah and also learning from those around me who have studied it further, is that it has very little to do with holyness. While Kabbalah contains elements that are very approachable and which I can also relate to and believe in: like "for every action there is a reaction" and all the things repeated by Madonna and the likes. But if you really look at them carefully, they do not have much to do with faith nor even Kabbalah; they are life's basic truths, which most people caught early on, some later. Madonna has said that she is intrigued by Kabbalah because that way she can "negotiate the world" and Catholicism did not allow her that because it was all about rules. In my opinion, if one needs to negotiate themselves a world, to suit it to their liking, it's a wrong starting point. True faith has rules that need to be obeyed in order to be saved, it is not something one can negotiate. You either believe in God or you will burn in hell. While we can take action, have an effect and change the world for the better, it is not something that needs to be negotiated. It is something that simply exists.

To me many teachings of Kabbalah are the opposite of true spirituality. Parts of the teachings seem to serve ego more than God and ego is our biggest obstacle in our path to enlightenment - so it is not a fruitful combination. It is not through organizations you need to give considerable money donations that you will obtain an enlightened state. That won't save anyone. Needless to say, I don't believe that through a ribbon around your wrist you will keep away bad things from happening. That is superstition, just like garlic to an imaginery vampire. A myth with no true foundation. But Madonna, just as any of her followers on this matter, can believe this - as it is their right. I only speak for myself, no one other.

I apologize, if I have hurt anyones feelings on this matter previous to this open letter, and I fear I might just have to apologize for all future comments in advance. I am not deliberately attacking the issue, never have. But I am not always capable or even willing to hide my resentment or present things simply as I receive them. Sometimes it is simply impossible to stay silent on matters that I find misleading, simply wrong, unethical or similar - and on those occasions I will add my own comment at the end of the post as I have done to this day. You can either read my comment or disregard it. As long as we can allow each other the freedom to speak up about our beliefs and express our opinions and believe as we want to believe, we are working together on this.
Those of you who are put off by this letter, do not fear - this blog is still dedicated to Madonna related information and content, and Madonnathon will not turn into a preaching blog about faith, religion nor Kabbalah. I wrote this open letter to you, simply to let you know where I stand on the issue(s) and to prevent misunderstandings. I acknowledge your full right to believe in what you want to believe - even if I encourage you to study. We all have our journeys, both in life and in faith, and if we are fortunate we will see the Truth at the end of our search.
I wish nothing but peace and love to each and everyone out there, no matter what you believe in, no matter where you are and no matter if you agree or disagree with me. I'm not out to get anyone. I am simply using my one voice. I hope you do the same whenever you feel the need and/or want to do so.
Thank you for your time.

David Banda's Biological Father Disapproves His Son Being Raised Into Kabbalah Beliefs

Madonna has done it again - upset the father of her adopted son David Banda by raising him in the Kabbalah faith. A source close to Madonna told Britain's Mail on Sunday newspaper: "Madonna and Guy have been taking David to Kabbalah and he is very much a part of their Friday night ritual. David goes with Guy and the children, Lourdes and Rocco, for prayers and teachings. Madonna turns up later for the meal." *Oh, but she loves Kabbalah so... Haha!

However, David's impoverished father Yohane Banda, who gave him up for adoption after his wife died, is a devout Christian and is worried about his son not being brought up in the same faith. He said: "I expect my children to belong to the same church as me. To follow in my footsteps."
Of her religion, Madonna has previously said: "I believe in Jesus and I study the Kabbalah, so I don't see why he (David) can't too." *Okay, do I always have to do this? Kabbalah is NOT A RELIGION. It is a man-made capitalist belief system, which has very little to do with anything truly sacred. I'm beginning to think all reporters are idiots.

UK Press Metro

Madonna's Hard Candy was reviewed in UK free city newspaper the Metro today.

US Reviews of Hard Candy

From New York Daily News - 4 out of 5 stars:

Imagine this: A new Madonna album comprised entirely of brisk, hard dance anthems, all boldly updating the blissful hits of her club-driven youth.

Now imagine that none of those songs (save the advance single) has anything to do with world politics, spiritual growth, starving African children or any lingering mother issues. Instead they present a wall-to-wall call to the dance floor, fired by ecstatic, innovative, and propulsive beats, paired to tunes that will make you swoon.

That's what Madonna's last album - 2005's 'Confession On The Dance Floor' - promised to be, but hardly was. We still had Kabbalah references, finger-wagging 'issue' songs and lots of cuts that weren't nearly as danceable or catchy as advertized.

Anyone disappointed by that album should take a lick of 'Hard Candy,' out Tuesday. It's everything 'Confessions' professed to be - and more: a disc that gorges on catchy choruses, nagging beats and insouciant vocals. It may be the best album of Madonna's career. Certainly it's the most consistent (not counting 'greatest hits' cheats).

Plenty of people will carp that Madonna had to haul in some of the heaviest hitters she has ever collaborated with to pull this off - including Justin Timberlake, Timbaland, and Pharrell. 'Hard Candy' represents only the third time in Madonna's long career when she has relied on top, proven talent as conspirators, rather than bringing in newbies she can nurture and/or control.

The last time she did this was her ultimate career low, in 1994, following the hideously reviewed 'Sex' book. She bounced back with 'Bedtime Stories,' produced by can't-miss guys like Babyface.

It's hard to say why Madonna felt she needed to bring in such headline-making help this time, unless it has to do with facing the Big Five-Oh - she hits it Aug. 16. Or the fact that 'Hard Candy' marks the end of her contract with the only label she has ever known (Warner Brothers). Either way, Madonna has given the company the richest possible parting gift.

Where to begin:

The first single - the smash '4 Minutes' - is probably the least engrossing track on the CD. It's the only one that goes for the political, rather than the personal, though it does so in such a vague way, you can barely tell. Of course, it's as much a Timberlake song as a Madonna turn but that's the only track where the star attraction threatens to piggyback on another person's turf.

That was the worry for 'Hard Candy.' Fans feared it would find Madonna vampirically sucking the blood of the latest urban gods to gain back her youth. But the point turns out to be moot. In fact, Pharrell and Timbaland have never sounded this frothy, and that clearly comes from Madonna's talent for zip.

Take 'Heartbeat.' Madonna co-wrote the cut with Pharrell, and although it benefits greatly from the hook of his trademark orgasmic moans, Maddy's vocal has an R&B sheen that cinches it.

The title track kicks off the CD and sets its exuberant tone. It's got tribal/urban beats, cunning lyrical innuendos, and a chorus with the R&B-jazz twist of a Kool and the Gang hit from the '70s.

In 'Miles Away' Madonna recycles a neat trick from the past: She uses abrupt guitar strums as an acoustic contrast to the synthetic clack of the beat. Vocally, she hasn't sounded as ravishing as she does here since 'Evita.'

'Incredible' has real bubble gum snap. 'Beat Goes On' makes sure it does.

I could go on raving about the tracks, but I won't. I want to go back and listen to them.

From New York Times:

When in doubt, take Madonna at face value. Since the beginning of her career she has telegraphed her intentions and labeled herself more efficiently than any observer. She has titled albums 'Music,' 'Erotica' and, in 2005, 'Confessions on a Dance Floor' for a collection that mingled personal and Biblical reflections with club grooves. Flaunting her ever-changing image, she named one tour 'Who's That Girl?,' another 'Re-Invention.'

She's just as blunt on her 11th studio album, 'Hard Candy' (Warner Brothers), due for release this week. There's no question that this album aims to please — and it does. 'See which flavor you like and I'll have it for you,' she promises as the album starts with 'Candy Shop,' and she follows through: 'Come on into my store/I got candy galore.'

Madonna ‘Cuts Off’ Father From Adopted Son

The father of the Malawian boy adopted by Madonna has accused the pop star of severing contact between him and his son and says he regrets ever putting the child up for adoption.

Yohane Banda, 33, said the singer had reneged on a promise to allow him to maintain regular contact with his son David, whom he last saw in 2006.

Banda, a peasant farmer, said he had not received any correspondence since the three-year-old was taken to London by Madonna and her husband, the film director Guy Ritchie.

Madonna, 49, began adoption proceedings after meeting the boy at an orphanage in Malawi. At the time it was claimed that the singer had used her celebrity status to fast-track the adoption, an allegation she denies.

The adoption is due to be approved formally by a court in Lilongwe, the Malawian capital, next month. Because the terms of the agreement are secret under Malawian law, it is not clear whether Banda’s intervention will jeopardise the adoption.

Banda, who first expressed his frustration at not being kept informed about his son’s progress a year ago, said the star had failed to address his concerns and he now regretted giving the boy up.

“I feel robbed. I should be able to see my son and say hello,” Banda said. “I don’t know how he is growing, what person he is turning into. This pains me because it looks like he is not my son any more.”

Banda, from Lipunga, a village 100 miles from Lilongwe, claims Madonna promised to keep him updated about his son’s well-being and his progress adapting to life with the celebrity couple and their two children.

“I was promised by Madonna that I would be able to see my son,” he said. “The government people that were coming to see me also assured me that they would facilitate my meetings with my son. I miss him so much because he is my only son, the only gift of life from God – all others have died. I told her [Madonna] that although I was giving her my son she should look after him well . . . I told her that she should raise him, educate him and make sure that he does not forget me and Malawi. Now I fear that my child will never know his roots and will not know me. He is the only surviving child I have and I regret the whole thing now. It’s so painful sometimes to realise that I have been forgotten.”

Banda claims the star snubbed him during a visit to the country in April last year. Madonna funds six orphanages through her Raising Malawi charity and is setting up one for 4,000 children in a village outside the capital.

“The last time Madonna came to Malawi, I didn’t know she was here and that she visited the orphanage. [If I had known] I would have been given a chance to see my son,” he said.

Banda said the only recent pictures he had seen of David were shown to him by journalists and the orphanage where his son lived before he was adopted. He added that he had not been allowed to keep any of the photographs. Banda said he hoped he would be given the opportunity to see his son again when Madonna, who has been granted temporary custody of the boy, returns to Malawi to conclude the adoption.

“I am praying that I have a chance to see him. All I want is for them to maintain contact as promised, to teach him I am his real father,” he said.

In a documentary premiered in America last week, the singer said that when she first saw David, nobody knew the whereabouts of his father. When she returned to see him three months later, Madonna said he “had pneumonia, malaria and God knows what else”.

The Malawian government has already recommended that the adoption go ahead. A report by an official who visited the singer’s London home last year concluded that the adoption was “in the best interests” of the boy.

Justin Dzonzi, a lawyer and prominent critic of the adoption, said both Madonna and the Malawian government had a moral duty to maintain contact between Banda and his son.

His group, the Human Rights Consultative Committee, is calling for a change in the law to ban adoptions by foreigners.

“If the government and Madonna promised, as is being claimed, to keep the biological father updated on his child, then they have to honour that for the sake of the poor man,” he said. “By allowing the adoption of his child he clearly surrenders his parental rights to Madonna and her husband but he still deserves some news on his boy.”

*Well, if this is true, I'd like to spank Madonna senseless! If she decides to adopt - of all the children in Malawi - a boy who indeed has a biological father who wants to remain in contact with him and receive news of him, she should absolutely and without one percent of hesitation grant him that, in addition to educating him of his roots. She - no matter if more capable of offering him a good material life and education - in fact ows the biological father this much. And one more reminder, wealth is not a measurement of good parenting, neither is the amount of nannies one has. Her behaviour around this adoption has been in scrutiny for many reasons, some of them are rude and without proof - but all in all, it does not seem that good. Where is the so-called enlightened woman who so cares about everything? Doing business deals and putting her career first. And now apparently, such things as promises can be erased as well. I condemn her behaviour. If one is the Queen of Pop, she's no damn better than any of us and she takes too much for granted these days. A devoted mother would have put the adoption first, career second, and that same type of mother would also keep her promises. Period.
